Originally from Dublin, Ireland, Carl came to the US in order to make a living in the racing industry. Within a year of being in the country Carl landed at Fair Hill Training Center with a job as an exercise rider for James "Chuck" Lawrence. Chuck allowed Carl to stable a horse in his barn in exchange for work, giving him a valuable "in" at Fair Hill.
Y'er Man's win in 2009 allowed Carl to recruit a few more horses to train allowing Carl to strike out on his own, forming CD Racing in 2010.
Carl loves galloping, and keeps his barn small enough that he can get on every horse himself at least a few times per week. This allows him to keep a close eye on each horse's progress both physically and mentally. Carl's training program builds a high level of confidence in young horses and rejuvinateds older horses that may have been down on their luck.
Megan grew up in Northern Virgina, pursuing her love of horses to Wilson College, where she earned her BS in Equine Management in 2003. It was during this time that she fell in love with thoroughbreds and horse racing, first working for Valerie Stevens and then for Diamond Oak Stables in Chambersburg, PA.
In 2004 it was time to move on, and Megan relocated to Churchville, MD to work for Turning Point Farm. It was here where Megan learned how to break horses for racing, and also where Megan and Carl met. In 2007 Turning Point Farm relocated to PA, but Megan and Carl stayed in MD forming Meadow Woods Training Center.
Megan holds down the fort at Meadow Woods and enjoys putting a solid foundation on each horse so that they may succeed on the race track and beyond.
About Doran Thoroughbreds
Doran Thoroughbreds began in 2007 in Churchville, MD with the opening of Meadow Woods Training Center. Here Megan and Carl combine their skills and love of thoroughbreds to give young horses the best possible start into their racing careers. We offer a unique combination of philosophies by letting horses be horses while at the same time giving them the skills necessary for success on the racetrack and beyond.
Carl began to pursue his love of racing further and in June of 2009 he trained his first winner, a horse named Y'er Man at Parx. He has parlayed that win into a string of 15 horses stabled year-round at Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton, MD. Fair Hill Training Center is the premier training center in the Mid-Atlantic, boasting both a dirt track and an all weather "Tapeta" track, a full service gate crew, and miles of hills for jogging and galloping. The relaxed atmosphere is ideal for young horses honing their skills as well as for older horses who need to rekindle their love for racing.
